Key considerations when choosing a gemstone

Colour

Colour is sometimes referred to as the most vital determinant of value of a coloured gemstone – with the most important constituents described as hue, tone and saturation.
Hue is the basic or unique colour of a gemstone. In other words, hue is described as the shade, tint or sensation of a colour – those that exhibit little hue and pure form of the basic colour are considered higher quality.
Tone represents the depth of a gemstone’s colour, ranging from colourless to black. In other words, tone describes the intensity of the colour by way of light, darkish or somewhere in between the spectrum. Generally, medium light – darkish tones are considered to be higher value. However, different people like different tones depending on their personal preferences.
Saturation refers to the purity of the colour in that the colour of the gemstone reflects purely the primary colour of the gemstones with no mixture of other colours or shades.

Clarity
A flawless gemstone is rare and usually expensively priced. Most gemstones have inclusions, or tiny mineral flaws, that can be seen under magnification or by the careful eye. A gemstone may have inclusions, cracks, spots, clouds, or any other blemish or imperfection. The general guide in coloured stones with regard to clarity is that the gemstone should be ‘eye-clean’.

Cut
Cut refers to proportions and symmetry of a gemstone – it should be symmetrical in all dimensions so it will appear balanced and its facets will reflect light evenly, which will provide good brilliance to a gemstone. When selecting gemstones for jewellery it is important to make sure the brilliance and beauty of the gemstone from the face-up top view is not compromised.

Carat
Weight of gemstones are measured in carats. – generally, the bigger the stone higher the cost. An interesting feature of the weight of coloured gemstones is that a carat weight of 2 different varieties can reflect 2 different sizes of gemstones – that is because of the variations in densities of different gemstones.

Enhancements
Heat treatment is the most common form of enhancement in sapphires and rubies. Heat treatment is an internationally accepted form of enhancement for gemstones. It is also possible to find completely untreated gemstones, however, at a substantial premium.
